The guidelines, drafted by the University of Catania within the framework of the project, offer a set of recommendations aimed at building and strengthening networks and associations of women returnees, with the goal of promoting reintegration processes that are sustainable and gender-sensitive.
Too often, the specific experiences and needs of migrant women are overlooked by return policies, as well as by integration processes in Italy, contributing to the perpetuation of structural inequalities and undermining the sustainability of reintegration pathways. Migration, however, can be understood in women’s life journeys as a process of empowerment, learning, and the development of self-awareness and understanding of their roles. Women, therefore, even within migration processes, can be agents of change.
The recommendations presented here are based on the testimonies and real needs of the women involved in the different phases of the project, and aim to provide a practical guide for organizations assisting women in Italy and throughout the entire return process, promoting fairer, participatory policies oriented toward women’s empowerment.
